Part 1: Embracing the Everyday Magic
I have a friend that reminds me about once a week to romanticize my life. When she first shared it, I was confused thinking it was nothing to romanticize. However, I dug deeper (using a little Pinterest) and found pins and boards dedicated to Black women romanticizing their lives. Some people might call it embracing one’s soft era, but I see it a little deeper. Romanticizing your life requires love. It requires you to assess the things that surround you to ensure they are based in love. It also requires a different way of thinking about the most basic things in your life. Romanticizing your life isn't about waiting for special occasions—it's about finding beauty in everyday moments. As Black women, we deserve to transform mundane routines into meaningful rituals that bring us joy.
We can start by reimagining our mornings. Instead of rushing through those first waking moments, create a ritual that feels special. Perhaps it's savoring that first sip of coffee while journaling or playing your favorite song as you prepare for the day.
Your environment shapes your experience. Consider how you might enhance your space:
Light candles with scents that uplift you. I love a good vanilla or woodsy scent.
Create playlists that match different moods. My mornings are usually filled with upbeat popular tunes to get me ready to take on the day. A little “Luther” by SZA and Kendrick Lamar or “Squabble Up” by Kendrick Lamar helps me get started.
Keep fresh flowers or plants in your home. Investing in plants that are easy to keep up helps, like a Spider Plant or Pothos.
Use fabrics and textures that feel good against your skin. When I leave the house, I often bring along my favorite sweater to remind you of home.
Here are two questions for you:
What small moment in your daily routine could you transform with just a little more intention?
How might you add a touch of magic to your morning?
Best,
